Pianist, Sam Leak, will join me for a swift 55-minute journey through a century of jazz song from Bessie Smith to Esperanza Spalding. Our contribution is part of Music Week at Goodenough College residence for international students.

Ellington & Strayhorn

Venue: Seven Arts Jazz, 31 Harrogate Road, Leeds

We celebrate the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn with the classics (and some forgotten masterpieces) that forged jazz – from Mood Indigo, Take the A’ Train, Lush Life to th rarely performed Rhumm Bop (‘Drum is A Woman’) and The Blues (Black, Brown & Beige’).
Recreating the trio format of my ‘Love You Madly’ ¬†album that marked the centenary of Ellington’s birth (with Tony Coe and Brian Priestley – 33 Records, 1999) I’ll be drawing on the talents of US reeds (and stupendous clarinet) player Frank Griffith, and pianist Richard Wetherall. Twenty years on, and even better!
