April in Paris
Duo with celebrated US pianist, Kirk Lightsey
April in Paris brought about a renewed partnership with Kirk Lightsey. What a pleasure to get back playing together again! To revisit the songs of our 2008 album Everybody’s Song But Our Own and then explore some favourite tunes. I thought I’d gone off standards until I felt that unmistakable Detroit swing.
A very sprightly and mischievous 78 years young, Kirk has played and recorded with Chet Baker, Kenny Burrell, Betty Carter, Clifford Jordan, Yusef Lateef, Rufus Reid, Pharaoh Saunders amongst others. He’s still going strong! His week at the Village Vanguard was nominated by the NYTimes’ as one of the top gigs of 2014! More to come…His ideal gig “a beautiful venue with Steinway, somewhere warm, by the sea, with a golf course.” He doesn’t ask for much. Why not? Simon Rattle’s asking for a whole new concert hall!
