Louise Gibbs is vocalist with the new Yorkshire Jazz Orchestra

Louise Gibbs is now the “girl singer” for the new Yorkshire Jazz Orchestra. Led by the veteran composer, arranger, drummer and educator, Tony Faulkner, the YJO brings together the best musicians in the region to play quality, original and contemporary jazz.  YJO’s launch concert on 20 October 2011 at Seven Arts, Leeds, premiered new compositions and arrangements by Faulkner, songs by Louise Gibbs, and pieces by Brazilian composer (and York resident) Zezo Olimpio.

The project has been year-long labour of love for Faulkner and 20 core players, tackling some of the most subtle and demanding writing for large ensemble in jazz today and providing a platform for the abundant performing, composing and arranging talent currently based in Yorkshire. The intention is for the YJO to become a permanent fixture. Faulkner, as moving force behind the band, sees his role as stewarding talent, with plans to commission new repertoire and to invite guest conductors and soloists. In the meantime, the YJO seeks gigs and funding.  Contact: Tony Faulkner: awfulmusic@yahoo.com
